Cartographica Helvetica

Summary

Günter Tiggesbäumker:

A stone-etched map by Andreas Pleninger. An unknown late 16th-century map of Europe in Ansbach City Archives

Cartographica Helvetica 4 (1991) 27–30

Summary:

An interesting rediscovery in the Ansbach City Archives is a circular stone plate representing a map of Europe. The map image, similar to a woodcut, is relief-like and positive reading. The south-oriented map is etched into limestone, the same material normally used for lithography. Such maps, which had been produced for decorative purposes only, are extremly rare in our cultural field. This map was designed by the artist Andreas Pleninger in Nuremberg around 1575. As a model, he used Tilemann Stella's famous 1560 woodcut map of Germany.
