Summary

Arthur Dürst:

Digital transformation of maps as research aid exemplified with the Holy Land map by Lucas Cranach and the corresponding map in the Froschauer bible

Cartographica Helvetica 9 (1994) 43–44

Summary:

The author describes how it became possible thanks to digital scanning techniques to reconstruct the map by Lucas Cranach the Elder of about 1515. Already in 1981, ten years before the discovery of the additional Amsterdam fragments, quite a simple reconstruction was carried out with the 1525 Holy Land map of the Froschauer bible as a model, which is, in turn, considered to be a copy of the Cranach map. A copy grid must have been in use at Froschauer's time.
