Henk A.M. van der Heijden:

The Itinerarium Sacrae Scripturae by Heinrich Bünting, 1581. A chapter in biblical geography

Cartographica Helvetica 23 (2001) 5–14

Summary:

Among other books, Heinrich Bünting (1545–1606), a Lutheran theologist from Hanover, was also the author of Itinerarium Sacrae Scripturae. This biblical geography first appeared in 1581 in Helmstedt, and until 1757, more than 60 editions were published in different languages. It also contains up to twelve maps, seven of which can also be found in many editions of the Bible. The most famous of these maps from the historical point of view, however, were the three emblematic maps from the Itinerarium which depicted the world as a clover leaf, Europe as a virgin, and Asia as Pegasus. This article describes these three maps and their history in detail.

At the end of the article the author provides a list of all editions of the Itinerarium known to him.
